Reign | Free Word

Visual artist and founder of the Bald Black Girl(s) project Ruth Sutoyé joined Free Word’s All The Ways We Could Grow Season with the debut of her short poetry film Reign.

Centring the narratives of black women who choose to shave their heads, the multi-disciplinary Bald Black Girl(s) project explores perceptions of masculinity, femininity and androgyny alongside sexuality, gender identity and barbershop dynamics. The project launched at Free Word with an evening of moving poetry readings and insightful, humorous and powerful conversation, with an exciting line-up of bald black women.

Reign is an afrofuturistic reimagining of a world where only bald black women exist. Watch the full film below.
